I Empower As A Mother: Patricia Massy

VancouverMom.ca Season 1 Episode 8

I Empower As A Mother, Episode 8, features Patricia Massy, owner of Massy Books, founder and director of Massy Arts Society, and co-founder of Indigenous Brilliance. Patricia is of Cree, Metis and English descent and a member of the As'in'i'wa'chi Ni'yaw Nation (Kelly Lake Cree Nation). She is also a mom to a toddler son. Separated from her own mother at 3-years old, she was raised by her English father, who ensured she understood, identified with and celebrated her Indigenous heritage.

In I Empower As A Mother, Christine learns Patricia's journey towards re-inventing her business against the backdrop of the pandemic, while still uniting a community by lifting the voices and stories of often excluded authors and artists. This episode explores the largest selection of Indigenous material in a storefront space in Vancouver and the first bookstore to be certified as a living wage employer on the traditional, ancestral, unceded, and occupied territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

VancouverMom.ca's As A Mother  Series is partially funded by a Government of Canada Heritage grant, which supports communities through arts and heritage and is made possible in part by the Government of Canada. All episodes are thoughtfully recorded and produced by Kahani Pictures and hosted by VancouverMom.ca founder Christine Pilkington.
